You hate to admit it, but you’re new at this computer stuff and want to get the best (and least confusing) gadgets out there. What do you choose?

  • Did you know you have pre-installed gadgets ready for the picking already on your computer? By selecting these gadgets, you can quickly and easily install them on your desktop. Windows Vista and Windows 7 have some great choices.
  • Choose the gadgets you believe you will actual use. This seems straight forward, but limiting your gadgets will actually free your mind to add the newly designed ones that come up that you’ve got to have.
  • Do some research online for gadgets. Limit your search by typing into your search box only those key terms for the specific gadget you’re looking for. “Map gadget” will get you all the gadgets that have “Map and Gadget” as the key words. If you go into Microsoft’s Desktop Gadget Gallery website, you will also find gadgets listed with a corresponding photo icon.
  • Get others to help you. There are great reviews online that can tell you what others like and why. Check with your friends and neighbors and don’t be afraid to ask questions if you have them. Find the latest blogs on the subject from someone who knows about gadgets and can help you.

Getting the best gadgets for your new computer takes a bit of research and some control, but in the end, if you follow the tips above, the best gadgets for your desktop will be realized.

You’re in the market for a new computer. What do you look for? What do you avoid?

  • What do you want from your new computer? Faster speed, light weight hardware, a bigger screen? Write down your needs and wants before you head to the store.
  • Don’t buy anything you haven’t discussed with the clerk. Make sure you are getting the deal you can afford as well as the computer you need. If you’re not sure about what computer will be best for you, ask questions until you are satisfied that you have your answer.
  • Make sure you take care of the rebate, if there is one, sooner than later. Rebate tickets can be easily lost or forgotten about. Time goes by and the rebate expires; suddenly, you’re out $50.
  • Do a lot of traveling? Do you attend school or have a business that takes you away from the desk more often than you’d like to admit? Then you might vie for the laptop over the standard home computer. Sure, hand-held devices like an I Pad or iPod may work for you, but when it comes to writing your college paper, a light weight laptop is a must.
  • Save your receipt. If there is a problem, you don’t have to hope for help without one.
  • Don’t be afraid to call the manufacturer if you have questions. Many have websites and a hot line or email that can be used to answer your questions.

New computers should work great for you; they’re new after all. Problems in the beginning often occur because you, as the user, are trying to jump the new hurdles.

Best Accessories for your Computer

The best accessories for your home computer may not be a well kept secret, but there are still some choices to make. How much do you want to spend? What do you spend time doing, or what do you want to incorporate into your life?

These ideas should help:

  • Try a webcam. A webcam is fairly easy to install and gives you the added benefit of hearing and seeing the speaker at the same time. If your family lives far or your best friend live across the country, a webcam is a must for continued connection in real-time.
  • Along with a webcam you’re probably going to want a headset. A headset is a great accessory when you’re doing something where you need to remain focused and hands free; and where others can remain focused on what they’re doing. A head set works for use during your web cam visits as well as when you want to listen to music when others are in the room.
  • Have an old computer that is a bit scratched up? Purchase a new cover or computer skin. Prices start at about $20.
  • A wireless key board and mouse is nice so that you don’t have to deal with the wires affecting your work. Better hand positions can be managed with a mouse that can slide wherever you want to take it.
  • Get a fun desktop background, whether you go for a design motif, furry animals or favorite actresses.

The good news is that even an older computer can look great if you add one or more of these accessories.
